General Info
Language
The official language in Oman is Arabic but many people speak English and most
signs are in both English and Arabic.
Currency
Oman's unit of currency is the Omani Rial, divided into 1000 Baizas. Notes come
in denominations of Rials 50, 20, 10, 5, 1. 500, 250, 200 and 100 Baiza notes
are also available. One Rial is equivalent to US$ 2.50 (Appx.).
Dress Code
Being a Muslim country, it is important to observe a certain dress code. In
public places, women should wear clothes that cover their upper arms and legs to
the knee. Men should wear long trouser and shirts. Shorts and sun tops are fine
at the beach or by the pool.
Infrastructure
Oil production accounts for almost half the country's gross domestic product.
The country is on a rapid expansion path. The country’s road transport network
and industrial infrastructure housing, health care and education facilities are
world class. Of late, the Govt. has chalked out plans to cash in on Tourism as
well.
Transportation
Oman's road network is well developed, particularly along the Gulf of Oman
coast, where a highway connects Muscat with Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
Another major highway connects northern Oman and Salalah in Dhofar. Driving on
these world-class roads is a pleasure.
Banks
Most banks, like Bank Muscat, National Bank of Oman and Oman International Bank,
offer services which include current and savings account, travellers cheques and
currency exchange. Indian Banks like State Bank of India, State Bank of
Travancore and Bank of Baroda have branches in Muscat. Banking Hours: (Sat -
Wed) 8.00am - 12 noon Thursday 8.00 - 11.30 a.m.
There are Money Exchange companies that operate on Weekdays and Fridays. Demand
Drafts can be obtained across the counter by paying Omani Riyals.

For general provisions and House-hold Items, you may visit the vegetable market
in Wadi Kabir. The market remains open from early morning till late night. Many
large and mid-size supermarkets also exist in all residential areas. All common
vegetables, spices, condiments and food flavours and additives used in India are
available in Oman.
Shopping Malls
